I think if they had a show on television about extreme classroom make-overs, I would be the perfect host. I am addicted to watching HGTV and DIY home makeover shows. Since, I actually live in an itty-bitty apartment, this is a true suck of my time. But, I can't help it. You should see me running around my apartment trying out all the cute ideas I see on the episodes. I am DYING to paint the cabinets in my bathroom and kitchen. My Pinterest obsession doesn't help either. I'm embarrassed to say how many Pinterest fails I have tallied up. OMG, if I actually owned a house, I would to totally be rocking a sledge hammer every summer.

This year I'm kind of bummed because I won't have a classroom of my own to organize and decorate. This is killing me! I'm so obsessed that I've offered to help set up other teachers' classes this year. I might be coming to a classroom near you...haha! I might need an intervention...

Here are some helpful tips in setting up your classroom...

1 - Start with a color scheme - select a few basic colors

2 - Zone Your Room - make sure you have a place for everything and everything has a place

3 - Sketch it Out - put it on paper before you move anything

4 - Container R Us - make sure you have everything accessible and labeled.

5 - Hide the rest - if it's not needed daily find a creative way to hide what you're not using

Sit back and enjoy a classroom that partners with you in teaching and reaching kids!
I can't believe summer is more than half over.

I've ALMOST forgotten how tired I was from last year and I'm beginning to bubble with excitement about the new faces I'll meet. I've even more excited about getting to set up my classroom. Yup, I'm one of THOSE teachers.I love setting up my classroom each year and I would start in July if I could. It kills me to have to wait for the custodians to finish waxing the floor and then have to literally wait for the wax to dry.Ugggh!!! It kills me every year!

This year, I am taking on a new position as a "Specials" teacher. I am truly excited because I'll be getting to teach technology to kids at a STEM academy. I will also get to serve as a mentor teacher on my new campus. This means I also get to do what I love by helping teachers. I almost want to pinch myself. I get to work with K-5 teachers in their classrooms developing engaging academic lessons. I'm so excited to work with so many teachers and their different instructional styles. I want my passion for teaching kids to be contagious.

What are you planning to do before the summer ends?

Oh, wait... Hi everyone! It's been a minute since I've blogged and you probably thought I was retired somewhere on a beach sipping margaritas (Ahhhh....to dream). Unfortunately I have been swimming in loads of paperwork, emptying the nest and holding 3 different positions since you last heard from me. I have been one busy chica!

With that all said, I going to try to get back to my blog and posting freebies and products on TPT (fingers crossed). Believe it or not I have quite a few almost finished. It is my hope that I will get motivated at the TPT Conference and meet some awesome teachers who love what they do as much as I do! I am a first timer to the TPT Conference and in my regular fashion I'm just now finalizing my trip.

I am FREAKING OUT!!!! All of the rooms at the Venetian are gone.... Found that out a week ago but that's not what has me on the verge of an anxiety attack. As I am dutifully printing out pages for my "TPT Conference Binder" and I'm seeing that people have buttons, T-shirts, bags and business cards for their stores!!!! What do I have---NADA!!! Now I am in a frenzy of activity, trying to figure out how I can get these in time for the TPT Conference. I haven't even packed. I don't even know where to begin! (me in almost tears). I need your help!

Does anyone know where I can get buttons made in the DFW area?
Would it be tacky if I made my own shirt?
How many business cards do I need?
Will anybody know me? Will I know anyone????
Any suggestions would be helpful!!!

All I can say is ...life happens. I feel like I have lived through 10 years in this short months. But enough of that... I've been working tirelessly on several projects that I plan to put in my TPT store. I am determined to finish working on a few and putting them in my TPT and TN stores. Originally, I planned on doing 12 days of Christmas, but, I know me. Instead I'm doing 12 days of Product Freebies Posts between now and Christmas. You get to see new products first and the first 3 people to respond to each post will get the product free!!!
Pinterest strikes again.... I found the recipe and idea on Pinterest. We told the kids that I received a box from the North Pole that had the magic sprinkles that we would add to our reindeer food. Santa sent the box to make sure that the reindeer could take a rest stop at our homes.

Yet another Pinterest inspired idea. The elf kisses idea came from anna and blue paperie? We had weekly assessments this day so the kids just enjoyed the kisses at the end of the day if they were on the nice list.
I have been struggling with being the "new" teacher at a new grade level, new school and new district....not to mention a tough group of kiddos. I've been trying so hard to learn the new curriculum, teach a rough group and learn the dos and don'ts. I'm EXHAUSTED. I love doing cute projects with the kids but I have so little time to incorporate anything additional to our curriculum. This is the first time in 8 years that I have not done anything for Thanksgiving. Where's the fun in that?
Since I have a few minutes over Thanksgiving break to breathe, I'm finishing my post about the Tw-elf days of Christmas. I want the kids to enjoy school and learning, so I'm going to make sure we enjoy the days before Christmas Break. One of my favorite activities is Elf on the Shelf. So here's 12 days of elfish fun:

The Elf left a clue for day three but not before "decorating" our Christmas Tree. We read the poem "Little Tree" by EE Cummings, used context clues to figure out words like spangles and we also made inferences about the figurative language in the poem . Students then made Christmas ornaments to hang on our little tree at the end of the day. Finally, the kids enjoyed cookies and milk because Santa had so many left over from all the boys and girls who left Santa treats by their Christmas trees.

Enjoy your break!

Maybe not...I almost threw in my hat, called it quits and rode off into the sunset. Moving to a new school is stressful enough without added drama. My life has been a CIRCUS! Since I first interviewed with my new school, I've had 4 different job titles - yup FOUR!!! This is a big deal to someone who is borderline OCD. I would no longer be self-contained and had to take 30 more students into my classroom (although now I would be team-teaching). We'd only been in school 3 weeks and I was about to lose it. I'm used to change and working with transient students, but this was pushing it. I figured that I could sub for a year and find a job that was better suited to my sanity.

I talked to my principal and she was very understanding and agreed to get me help re-organizing my room to accommodate the changes. She sent a retired teacher/principal to help me prepare all my student notebooks, journals, book boxes and etc. She was a Godsend and knew just what to say to comfort my frantic mind. Now I think I might just be able to do this...with God's help!

Well now that I have to switch classes with another teacher, I need a way to keep my classroom management under-control. I send my students to my partner teacher with a clipboard that tracks students. I use this weekly behavior sheet to track who has turned in homework and has broken classroom rules. It's very handy tool at the end of the day when I send home behavior sheets to parents because they know exactly why their student has had a color change.

I'm putting a copy of this tracking tool in my TPT and TN store. The first five people to comment on my page can have it as a FREEBIE!!!
Admitting you have a problem is the first step, right? I spend hours on projects that I think will take a "few" minutes. I've spent the last two weeks working like a madwoman trying to get my room ready. If you know me, this is no small feat. I am the teacher who is ususally the first one in the building unpacking and the last one at the end of the year. My new class wasn't ready for move-in until 2 weeks ago, so I'm still "adding" to it daily. Almost every corner has "pinteresting" feature.
I am in awe of all the truly fantastic teacher resouces available made by teachers for teachers. I'm sure I failed to give credit where credit was due for all the wonderful inspiration, ideas and work from fellow teachers Thanks ya'll and have a great year!Carmela Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06764509294204133916noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2479770732041455047.post-86936430635810631392013-08-12T20:59:00.000-05:002013-08-12T21:08:38.167-05:00Monday Made it - can u believe it?It's official... I start my new job in this week. I've moved to a new school that's closer to home and my family. This year I'll be back in third grade. I've been working on hard this summer getting things ready for my new classroom. Now that I'm self contained I've been creating stuff for all subjects. That means I also have quite a few TPT projects in the works. I never realized how much time it takes to put a unit together (especially when you have OCD issues).

I've been away for awhile, so decided to join Fourth Grade Frolic's Linky and share a short post. I've been checking out great projects all summer long. Here are my latest Monday Made It Projects.

I'm obsessed with Pinterest and my latest pinspiration was a homework board. I couldn't resist making a magnetic homework club board and magnets to motivate kiddos to turn in their homework each week.

I also made scoreboard for whole brain teaching this year. I started last year with the basics and must admit that we just got as far as the rules, class-yes, switch and mirror. This year I want to step up our game and work on the scoreboard and super improvers wall.

Last but not least....
Thanks to Mrs. Stanford, I was able to find a few treasure box goodies for 30 cents!

I hate to think about how badly things could go wrong in an emergency situation. For someone who loves to procrastinate, I do feel better when I "think" I'm prepared for unforeseen emergencies.

Our school recently had a training about how to handle campus intruders and what to do if we have an emergency school lock down. In the wake of Sandy Hook, I guess this is going on in schools all around the nation. I can never be emotionally ready to handle such a tragedy because I really do love my kiddos and would hate for something so awful to happen to them.

I decided that the same idea could be used for emergencies and now I'm creating a class "Boogie Bucket." I'm using large 5 gallon buckets that I fill with emergency supplies like a first aid kit, a flash light/radio, tissue, toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, duct tape, plastic bags, flash cards/travel games, a whistle, emergency contact info and student care packages. Next week I'm sending home a letter to ask parents to prepare a Ziploc bag with things to comfort their child in case of an emergency.
Haw!It seems like so long since I've written a post. I'm sure you call all relate to the whirlwind of activity that is know as spring. You know the signs - procrastination, dragging minutes, extended outside activities, piling paperwork, mounting deadlines and not to mention test anxiety looming in the air. I am amazed at the number and frequency of programs, parent nights, open houses, meetings and training that is occurs this time of the year. Now that's it's spring break, I finally have a chance to breath (and post).
Last week, we celebrated Texas Public Schools Week. My kiddos studied about Texas symbols, history and traditions. I just love the unit that April Larremore has about Celebrating Texas. You should check it out - it's a great unit. We did a few of the activities in class and created a Texas Symbols flipbook. I just posted the foldable on TPT and Teacher's Notebook.
Being a single mother of a teenage daughter is exhausting (not to mention the 44 little ones I teach). I must say it has its own rewards. One of my former students thanked me for making learning "magical" for his sister. Wow, he nearly brought me to tears!

I wanted to post about the best of 2012 but I haven't had time to collect the pics and etc. But since I've been gone so long I decided to gift you with a freebie! Okay, let's get real. Not that many people follow my blog -so I'm truly grateful for those of you that do. And if you're just stoppin' by, feel free to follow my blog and my TPT store---shameless plea----. There's lots of good stuff (and of course freebies) I have planned for this year!

I love teaching inference... kids say the cutest things when they infer. I like to do an inference gallery to get their brains to warm up to the idea.

Students do a gallery walk and make inferences about each masterpiece. They leave a sticky note on their favorite artwork. I print the sticky notes on my printer and keep them on laminated paper until the kids are ready to make their inferences. I've seen several Pinterest posts on how to use your printer to print on postit notes. I 've been doing this for years and now 3M has even create sheets that go into your printer. I wouldn't recommend using a copier though.

The children learned that the elf loses its magic when it is touched and you are automatically on the naughty list for the day. We read Twas the Night Before Christmas and drew what we visualized, found the rhyming words and used context clues to determine what sugar plums were. The children read the clue left by the elf and tried to figure out what he was giving them for a treat. Here's the clue....
At the end of the day, a package was delivered from the office containing a jar of Twizzlers that was shared with the students on the nice list. I'll post pictures of our activities tomorrow :0)

I had my formal observation, robotics competition, teenage daughter with a shoe fetish, new rug = rearrange room, Pinterest addiction, Christmas shopping, holiday decorating, and the 12 Days of Christmas - just to name a few. Needless to say, I haven't been able to blog as much as I would like.
I guess I'm the last person on Earth to hear about the Elf on the Shelf. The book and elf are the cutest thing. I wish I had known about it when my kids were smaller. In case you're in the same boat, let me explain. A Christmas elf reports to Santa who is naughty or nice. The elf pops up in unexpected places each day and leaves a message and/or treat. When Santa arrives on Christmas Eve, the elf leaves with him.

I decided to do 12 days of Christmas with a classroom elf for my class. We're studying poetry and fiction stories so I can tie the elf into my lessons. He leaves clues each day for the "nice" students up until Christmas Break. Each of the 12 days we have a poem clue and a surprise. I'm plan to post the 12 days as we do them for the next two weeks.

Day 1 - Meet the Elf
On day one we meet the elf, read the book and give him a name. I also read the first clue and the kiddos try to guess the treat. At the end of the day, I share the naughty and nice list and give each child a treat (lollipops).

Jessica at Mrs. Stanford’s Class blog hosted a product swap and I am here to show you the fun product I got to review. I was able to swap products with the wonderful Heather Perkins at Second Grade Perks. She has some really great products at her TPT Store - Check em' out. The product she swapped with me was her Word of the Day unit.

This unit is a very useful tool to help enlarge student vocabulary. Since I teach at a Title I school, I'm always looking for ways to build schema and increase student vocabulary. It was easy to incorporate into Daily5/CAFE because my students are already working on collecting words.

Heather's Vocabulary packet really spells out how use her unit.

She introduces 2 words on Tuesday and Thursday and students work on vocabulary for homework. Every Friday students have a vocabulary quiz.

It's been raining this weekend, so I've been able to just finish putting together the second part of the context clues unit. I put together mini-lessons that I've used in my classrooms to teach this concept to my kiddos. Since I've taught K-8, many of the lessons can be adapted for upper elementary students. I love using picture books to introduce a concept or teach a strategy.
I'm so loving spending time with my daughter. It is so unusual for her to open up and talk to me.-- actually she's trying to annoy me into leaving the house with her. I'm just going to finish this post and we can leave since she's looking over my shoulder. Gotta love teenagers!!!
Anywho, I just finished updating my reading response notebooks and have put them on TPT and TN. I also finished working on typing my strategies for my CRAFT/CAFE Board. Sweet Kristen at Ladybug Teacher files was kind enough to share her CRAFT Board papers which I used to type up the mini-lesson strategies.
Lucky you, I giving it away as a FREEBIE! Click the picture below and enjoy.
My kiddos showed up in full force. I love what I do! I finally took pictures of my classroom after the umpteenth time rearranging my room. I can never say I'm ever done - since I have a pinterest addiction - but I am please with the current state of things. Looks like a giant room, huh. I actually have a very small room with a wall of mirrors.

I have six table groups by color. Since I team teach, I can't really label anything with student names so my chair pockets are numbered 1-4 to make for easy grouping.

In the back of the room I have my small group area and my Writing resources for the Daily 5. I also have a few pinterest inspired projects - rainbow drawers and teacher toolboxes. In the front of the room I have my class library, whole group area and word wall.
It's nice to breathe a little this weekend. I think my life is a 3-ring circus and it seems harder and harder to juggle all the little balls. As a matter of fact, I dropped the ball. I haven't been posting to my blog like I thought I would this year. The start of school is so hectic, plus I've had 10 new students added to my roster, and add the fact that my daughter got her first job (and doesn't have her license, yet) and you get one tired mamma. Well, the show must go on!

I've been working on context clue mini-lessons for my little second grade sweeties. I created a two part unit that includes mini-lessons, anchor charts and activities to teach context clues. Context Clues (Part 1) has been posted to my TPT store and at Teachers Notebook.

I teach my students a six tools to use for context clues. In Context Clues (Part 1), I begin by teaching how to use pictures, words you know and helping words to identify the meaning of unknown words. In Context Clues (Part 2), I include using examples, definitions synonyms and antonyms as context clues.

I use several books as mentor texts as we discover how to use context clues. Some of these books are listed in my Reading Comprehension Skills Book List. This unit also includes an expanded book list of possible mentor text to use for teaching context clues. The first 3 followers to comment will receive Part One for free!!! Just be sure to send me feedback :) Pretty Please!!!

Carmela Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06764509294204133916noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2479770732041455047.post-5067348500077941762012-09-02T18:48:00.002-05:002012-09-02T18:52:59.091-05:00Just when I thought I was finished and a freebie....Well, I'm definitely pleased that this is a 3 day weekend. Who would of ThUnK I would be so exhausted after only one week of school? I spent most of yesterday asleep! Today we've been up and about enjoying the beautiful weather. On the back of my mind have been all the "little" projects I have yet to finish for my classroom. I'm beginning to wonder if the list will ever shorten. My daughter says I just create work for myself. I think I'm a little OCD - I can't help it.

Just when I thought I my room was picture perfect, I find out we're losing a teacher because of "leveling." For those of you who don't know what that is, its when the district decides to fill every classroom to capacity to most effectively serve the budget. I understand that this is a necessary evil, but it still makes me sad to lose a team member. I am thankful that my co-worker gets to stay at our school in another grade level. With the changes, I have inherited more students in my teeny tiny classroom. Needless to say, I have to rearrange my room to accommodate 11 more children. I feel like the little old lady who lived in a shoe.

I cannot put into words how important it is for me to have everything labeled and organized. It literally affects my sanity. So now I have to go back and create additional labels, take more student pictures and organize notebooks, spirals and folders - AGAIN. Well, that can wait until Tuesday (probably not but I like to think so...) I'm enjoying my weekend so much that I've decided to share a few freebies!

Here are classroom library signs that I created to help remind students about taking care of our library. I also included Books in the Spotlight for our weekly featured books/authors.
